Ways to Prevent Identity Theft

There are many ways to prevent identity theft. Throughout this website you'll find all the tips you need to keep yourself safe. On this page I've included my top three ways to prevent identity theft. For more tips check out the link to the left: "prevent identity theft".

Monitor Your Credit

Monitoring your credit cannot stop a criminal from stealing your identity, BUT, it can minimize the damage if they do.

A big misconception about identity theft prevention is that credit monitoring will prevent it from happening. Credit monitroing will alert you to problems with your credit, like new accounts opened in your name by a criminal.

The major benefit of credit monitoring is that it will alert you to problems before they get out of hand. Most victims of ID theft find out they are a victim 4-7 months after the crime initally occurred. If you monitor your credit often, you can be alert of problems much quicker.

Shred or destroy your junk mail

Believe it or not, but one of the most common methods identity thieves access our personal information is by rummaging through our garbage. These punks will search for anything that has personal information available. For example, credit card offers, billing statements, letters, anything!

If you shred or destroy this personal information, the thieves can never find it and use it against you.

When in doubt, shred, shred, shred.

Carry only necessary card on you at all times

One of the best methods to prevent identity theft is to reduce the number of credit cards you carry.

If you wallet/purse is lost or stolen and you have all your cards in that wallet or purse you just exposed all your available credit to that thief.

If you only carry 1 or 2 cards, whether its a credit or debit card, you've just significantly reduced the amount of damage a thief can do to you if the get their slimy hands on your lost item.
