Identity Theft Protection Information
Identity theft protection information is easy to access these days. Identity theft is the fastest growing crime and there is an abundance of information available for you.
Here's what you need to know...
1. You can never be fully protected from identity theft
I hate to tell you this, but you can shred all the documents in your home, cut up your credit cards, and buy all the identity theft protection services you want...it won't make a difference.
Our personal information is EVERYWHERE people. Your doctor's office has it, your employer has it, your mortgage broker, lender, landlord, credit card company. The list goes on.
Nothing is stopping a jerk working at one of those companies from accessing your file and using your personal information.
Not "LifeLock", not "Identity Guard", not freecreditreport.com...nothing can help you.
2. You cannot stop identity theft, but you can minimize your risk.
Using a paper shredder to destroy your mail, checking your credit report regularly, not giving your social security number to strangers, not carrying all your credit card on you at all times. All these things can lower your chances of identity theft.
3. Don't spend money on an identity theft prevention service unless they offer recovery assistance.
Most if not all identity theft prevention services WILL NOT help you if your identity is stolen while you are their client.
They might reimburse the expenses you accumulate during the recovery process, but they will not, I repeat, they will not help you actually recover your identity. Trust me, its a pain-in-the butt to restore your identity.
There are companies out there that do offer identity theft prevention services and recovery assistance. These are the companies you should spend money on.
Identity theft protection information is easy to access, but candid, practical advice is hard to find. For more no-nonsense information check out our page on prevent identity theft. Just follow the navigation link to your left.
