Identity Theft Penalty Enhancement Act

The Identity Theft Penalty Enhancement Act of 2004 was signed into law on July 15, 2004 by President Bush. The IDTPEA set a standard of punishment for this crime that was previously nowhere to be found.

Thats not to say those convicted were not punished prior to this law, but after the IDTPEA was signed, there appeared, for the first time, solid penalties for identity theft.

Prior to the IDTPEA, this was a difficult crime to punish due to the various consequences of identity theft. Some victims lost thousands of dollars, while others may have lost no money, but time and energy restoring their identity.

Also, due to the dramatic increase in identity theft in the 2000's, legislators felt the need for a standardized law a high priority.
