You can got to the websites of transunion, experian, or equifax, go to freeecreditreport.com, or use a monthly service like truecredit.com
The main thing is to get a copy and examine it for errors.
If your score is low, or below what you thought it should be, chances are you have an error.
If you have any of the following on your report as an error, GET IT OFF as soon as possible. These are listed in order from the most damaging to your report to the least damaging.
- Bankruptcies
- Charge-offs
- Collections
- Court Judgments
- IRS Liens

- 60 days late payments
- 30 days late payments
- Unauthorized credit pulls
Step 2: Call your creditors
If you have a problem with one of the creditors on your report, call them directly and ask they remove the error. Often they will contact a credit bureau on your behalf as a means of getting
the error off your record. They do this to encourage a business relationship with you and it leads to a faster result than doing it yourself.
Step 3: Dispute with a credit bureau
If you have errors or questionable information on your report that you can't discuss with a creditor directly, conatct the credit bureaus. Send a letter to each bureau challenging them on the error.
If you have multiple errors, it works best if you focus on the easiest to have removed and then work to the more difficult error.

Step 3: Wait
Once the bureau receives your letter, it will be checked by a clerical employee who decides whether your dispute is ridiculous or complete and logical. These employees probably see hundreds of
letters a day, so make yours short and to the point.
Once the letter is classified as valid, it will go on to the investigations department. They will look into your dispute and they have 30 days to prove or disprove the item you are challenging.
If they take longer than 30 days, the infomation must be removed from your report.
If after 30 days you do not receive a response, you should send another letter.
If you receive a response and the item is verified and correct, it will remain on your report. However, you have the right to continue the dispute, just make sure you wait another 2 months before
submitting another letter.
If they find your dispute accurate, the credit bureau will notify the creditor and ask them to verify the item in question. If the creditor agrees it is a mistake, then the credit bureau will clear this item
from your report!
Once an item is removed, you are entitled to an updated report. When you receive that report, make sure you send it to the other credit bureaus as proof that the item in question was deleted
from your record.
