If you are a business owner, identity theft can ruin your business.





As a business owner, identity theft is just as dangerous as individual identity theft. In fact, savvy criminals may be more likely to target a successful business than individuals.

To a criminal the benefits are obvious: more money and more resources to steal. They scary thing about business identity theft is that your own employees may be the thieves.

There could be many scenarios for business identity theft...

1. "Conventional" identity theft

In this case a criminal outside your business may gain access to your business' inside information through conventional identity theft techniques. These include dumpster diving, stealing mail, online phishing, or even stealing business credit cards or FEIN numbers.

2. Employee identity theft 1

In this case an employee of yours could gain access or probably already has access to internal business information. They can easily steal some information and use it against you. I

3. Employee identity theft 2

In this case, an employee of yours may have access to personal information of clients and steal THEIR information. They may use you and the business as a conduit to an individual's personal information.

A business owner concerned about identity theft should follow the same steps to protect their business as their own personal information...

...including shredding or destroying important paperwork, checking the business's credit report, and restricting important information to trusted sources.
