ATM Identity Theft
ATM identity theft, or debit card identity theft is just as dangerous as credit card identity theft. Although it doesn't occur as often, it can do just as much damage to your finances as credit card fraud.
Here are some common scenarios with ATM identity theft...
Skimming
Skimming occurs when some jerk places an electronic device on the credit card/debit card swipe machines you use when you buy groceries, clothes, gas, etc. Often the jerk bribes the clerk behind the counter in order to place the device on the swipe machine. Im not an expert in identity theft electronics, but from what I understand, the thieves are then able to record your debit card information once you swipe your card.
Hidden cameras
I know, it sounds so cliched and simple, but these bums will actually place hidden cameras on atm machines to record your PIN as you type the numbers. Often this technique is used togehter with skimming and witholding.
Witholding
Witholdding occurs when they place some obstructive device within the actual atm machine card slot. The intent is to get your card jammed in the machine and either the thief watches you enter your PIN while they wait next to you or through a camera. When you try to retrieve your card after your transaction, it gets jammed and the thief waits for you to leave. Once you leave they will retrieve your card, and knowing your PIN they can then go on a shopping spree.
Sophisticated identity thieves are so good at this that you can actually complete the transaction without disrupting the machine. The card only gets jammed when it tries to slide out.
Hacking
Since your atm card is associated with your bank, another technique identity theieves can use is to hack into your bank's database and retrieve your debit card information. Although banks have teams of computer experts constantly fighting hackers, it is still possible for this to occur.
As similar situation can occur when an employee at the bank accesses your account and drains your debit card.
Protect Yourself
An easy way to protect yourself from atm identity theft is to constantly monitor your finances. Keep a close eye on your bank accounts and financial statments. You know how we tell you to check your credit report for credit fraud? Checking your bank statments is the equivalent for your debit card. Check often and make sure your finances appear as they should.
When using an atm, make sure you conceal your PIN number. While typing the number with one hand, cover this hand with your other hand.
