Jan 8, 2008, I knew "free" didn't mean "free"

If you've read through our website thoroughly, you'll notice that I don't make reference to many of the "free" credit reports available.

Why? Because, often they're not free!

Or, if you want to actually get a free copy, its so watered down, that it basically tells you nothing about the quality of your credit. Check out this great article I found on consumeraffairs.com about all those "free" credit reports.

Dec 18, 2007, Our story...my rage

Back in 2000, my grandma was enjoying life in her retirement home. Whether it was socializing, doing crafts, reading, and socializing some more...she loved life at her retirement home.

I remember going there one day and finding my mom and grandma POURING over paperwork...what looked like important paperwork like bills and bank statements.

Soon enough I found out someone had been taking money from my grandma's account. Apparantly this person was writing phony checks to buy novelty items.

The whole incident shocked my family as it would you and yours, but the reality is that this happens EVERY DAY. It took several trips to LaSalle Bank to straighten out the mess, but with the help of the people at the bank, my mom, sister, me and my grandma, we were able to recoup some of her lost money.

Later we discovered that the jerk writing these checks had obtained her checks by dumpster diving...the most common method of getting personal information.

I dont know what made me so mad because in the end everything turned out alright. Maybe it was the hours we spent fixing the problem, maybe it was the money she actually lost, or the feeling of being violated and taken advantage of.

I imagine its a similar feeling when someone gets robbed whether on the street or their house.

Whatever it was, I felt anger. Kinda like a cheesy action movie where the hero's family gets killed and he goes on a rampage to get revenge.

That was 7 years ago and since then I have obtained and encouraged all my friends and family to get an identity theft prevention service. I am VERY diligent, (in case you havn't guessed) about my own personal identity theft prevention techniques, and this obsession led to informing others about the problem and to the creation of this website.

I encourage you to learn as much as possible about identity theft and invest in a protection service (most are around $10, its worth the money). You dont want to spend hours, days, weeks, and years picking up the pieces of your life because some jerk took advantage of you!
